MOLECULAR SIEVES

Molecular Sieves are also known as an activated zeolite. It is a crystalline, porous aluminosilicate with uniform pore structures and definite diameters. It limits the passage and absorption of oversized molecules and under-sized molecules easily passes through the sieve. The separation is either due to molecular size or polarity. The term molecular sieve is only applicable to the surface of the zeolite which is like a sieve. The crystallographic geometry is due to the tetrahedral structure of alumina and silica.


The water of hydration is removed via heating, resulting in a vacant space or void. The void is capable to re-adsorb the water or any polar molecule. The enhanced internal surface area (close to 1000 m2/g) coupled with strong ionic force (due to the presence of cations such as sodium, calcium and potassium) increases the adsorption of considerable amount of water/polar component.


The mesh size decides the phase to be handled. Usually, 4-8 mesh sieve is used in gas phase applications, while 8-12 mesh sieve is common in liquid phase applications.

APPLICATIONS :

  • Adsorption of molecules (NH 3 & H 2 O from N 2 /H 2 flow).
  • Dehydration and CO removal from air for cryogenic processing
  • Dehydration of unsaturated Hydrocarbon streams (cracked gas, propylene, butadiene, acetylene etc.)
  • Drying of polar liquids (methanol, ethanol etc.)
  • Incorporated directly into plastics packaging and used in desiccant dehumidifiers (dry boxes) to protect moisture-sensitive contents.
  • Medical Uses: Oxygen concentrators for respiratory therapy.
  • Molecular sieves are added to protect products such as pharmaceuticals, batteries, film, fuel propellants, machine parts, and electronic components.
  • Packaging moisture sensitive drugs & removal of odors
  • Removal of CO, H, S, mercaptans and other impurities from natural gas or natural gas liquids
  • Remove impurities from gases or liquids to extremely low ppm level.
