iron removal media

BIRM MEDIA

Groundwater often contains dissolved ferrous/manganese bicarbonates (due to the presence of excess CO2) that cannot be filtered. Birm media plays an essential role by removing these dissolved Ferrous and Manganese ions. It is an insoluble catalyst that initiates the reaction between Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Ferrous/Manganese compounds. The Fe2+ ion undergoes quick reduction by converting to Fe3+ ion, thereby forming ferrous hydroxide precipitate which can easily be filtered and separated.

When used to reduce manganese, the water to be treated should have a pH between 8.0-9.0 and for iron, it should have pH above 6.5 for best results. If both manganese and iron are to be removed, the water to be treated should have a pH below 8.5.

FEATURES :

  • High iron/manganese removal efficacy.
  • Works over a varied temperature range.
  • Low attrition loss.
  • No regeneration required.
  • Long material life.
  • Economically advantageous as being catalyst it is not consumable and no chemicals are required for regeneration.

SPECIFICATION :

APPLICATIONS :

  • Manufacturing or fabricating bacterio-static water filter products.
  • For home use, cartridges, potable water, and beverage water.
  • For all industrial/municipal water treatment use.

SUGGESTED OPERATING CONDITIONS :

Alkalinity

Should be greater than the combined sulfate and chloride concentration.

Maximum water temperature

100°F/38°C

Water pH Range

6.8 to 9.0 (for Fe2+)/8-10 (for Mn2+)

Dissolved Oxygen

Atleast 15% of the iron/manganese content.

Bed Depth (inches)

30 to 36

Freeboard

Minimum 50% of bed depth

Service Flow Rate

3.5-5 gpm/sq.ft. intermittent (favorable local conditions may allow higher rates).

Backwash Flow Rate (@ 60oF)

10 to 12 gpm/sq.ft.

Backwash Bed Expansion

Atleast 20-40% of bed depth.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES :

  • The water should not contain oil, H2S and the organic concentration should not be more than 4-5ppm.
  • pH should be above 6.5. If not, the use of calcite or soda ash is suggested before using the birm media
  • Dissolved Oxygen (D.O.) content must be equal to at least 15% of the iron (or iron and manganese) content.
  • Chlorination and polyphosphates can coat the birm and reduce its efficacy. Thus the chemicals should be prior tested for backwashing before the use.

SAFETY ASSESSMENT :

Eye contact : Flush with water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation occurs and persists, obtain medical attention.

Skin contact : Wash with plenty of soap and water. If irritation occurs and persists, obtain medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse.

Inhalation : Get fresh air. If breathing difficulty or discomfort occurs, call a physician.

Ingestion : Drink one to two glasses of water. Do not induce vomiting. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious individual. Call a physician immediately.
